OUR CORE VALUES

Program Overview

The Indiana Smoke Diver Program is an intensive six-day, 60-hour course created for experienced firefighters seeking realistic training in skills that matter most when lives are on the line. The course focuses on firefighter survival, firefighter rescue, advanced search techniques, thermal imaging, team leadership, situational awareness, decision-making, and operating effectively within the Incident Command System.

Designed to replicate the physical and mental demands firefighters may encounter at any incident, the program places candidates in demanding, high-stress scenarios that mirror the challenges faced at structure fires, multiple-alarm incidents, and extended operations. The same principles taught throughout the course also apply to natural disasters, acts of terrorism, and other high-risk/low-frequency events. Under carefully supervised conditions, candidates learn to recognize and manage their physical and mental limitations while maintaining focus, discipline, and operational effectiveness.

Through progressive problem-solving and forced decision-making, candidates gain valuable experience in a condensed timeframe, helping them operate more efficiently and safely during real-world emergencies. While the course continues to evolve alongside advances in firefighting technology and firefighter safety, its core mission has remained unchanged since its development in 1978:

Preparing firefighters to perform at their best when conditions are at their worst

Because of the grueling schedule and the intense physical and mental nature of the Program, candidate safety is a top priority. Nutrition and hydration are closely monitored throughout the course, and all participants must provide medical clearance from a licensed physician prior to attendance. To ensure accountability, safety, and adequate recovery, all candidates are also required to utilize the provided lodging accommodations.

As the fire service continues to expand its responsibilities, training has often shifted toward creating emergency service generalists rather than highly skilled specialists. Firefighters and civilians suffer death and injury due to failures in decision-making, lapses in situational awareness, and lack of violent execution when seconds count. The Indiana Smoke Diver Program is built on the belief that these critical skills can only be developed through realistic, hands-on training conducted under stress. True proficiency is not gained through classroom presentations or checklists — it is earned through repetition, experience, and performance under challenging conditions.
